Todays daily photo is of the west facade of the Risen Christ Catholic Church in Denver, Colorado designed by James Sudler and completed in 1970.
The church came to mind following an architectural tour I joined yesterday of the Denver Art Museum’s, Gio Point designed North Building, renovation and the new Welcome Center by Machado Silvetti. On that tour I learned that Sudler had worked with Ponti on the North Building.
The church also shows up in Woody Allen’s movie “Sleeper,” along with the Sculptured House I posted the other day.
Its often referred to as the “ski jump” building due to its shape, not really illustrated in this photo, but you see the beginning of the sloped steeple that continues to elevate to the sky. I’ll have to post that image another day, but for today I wanted to share this photograph as I particularly like the harsh afternoon light falling on the building, highlighting its shape and the narrow vertical windows, reminding me of the skinny light leaks in Ponti’s North Building.
Westword published a brief article several years ago highlighting some of Sudler’s other buildings if you want to learn more.
