LAX Theme Building

LAX Theme Building

Welcome to LA!

This photograph is of the famous Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport.

The iconic mid century modern design represents everything that was exciting about the space age era off the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The steel reinforced concrete flying saucer was designed by modernist architects William Pereira and Charles Luckman. It was the result of a significantly scaled down master plan that originally included a massive glass dome connecting the terminals and parking lots. The Theme Building is located at what would have been the center of the dome. Could you imagine? That would have been amazing!

So the glass dome airport wasn’t meant to be, but I would say Pereira and Luckman hit out of the park with this design!
