Grit explores the untamed spirit of Colorado’s wild mustangs. Captured in Colorado’s Sand Wash Basin and Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse areas, the series reveals the physical and emotional toll of life in the wild, battered coats, notched ears, worn-down hooves, and eyes that have weathered countless storms.

Unlike the pristine show horses I grew up around, these mustangs appear small, scarred, and at times, seemingly miserable. But after hours in their presence, it became clear: they are exactly where they want to be. Free. Untethered. Living life on their terms.

The name “Grit” speaks to more than survival. It reflects their quiet dignity, their defiance, and their way of being. In their presence, I couldn’t help but reflect on our own need for grit, the kind that carries us through the hard seasons and keeps us moving forward.
